来月、長年お付き合いのある取引先が主催する「GAC（Global Academic Competition）」の視察で、イギリスへ行くことになりました。
この大会は、12歳〜15歳と15歳〜17歳の生徒が10人1チームとなり、英語でディベートやプレゼンテーションを行う歴史あるコンペティションです。南米や東南アジア、中央ヨーロッパなど、世界中から学生が集まります。
日本の学校は春休みの日程と合わない事情などもあり、これまで参加実績がありません。参加には英検2級以上の英語力が求められますが、英語教育に力を入れている学校の高校2年生であれば、十分に挑戦できるチャンスがあると考えています。そこで来年に向けて、現在協業している大手旅行会社様と共に、中学校や高校へこのプログラムをご提案していきたいと計画しております。今回はその視察も兼ねており、他国からも20名ほどの先生方が参加される予定です。
ところが……最近の中東情勢の影響で航空券が高騰しており、直行便のエコノミークラスでも40万円ほどになってしまっています。手持ちのユナイテッド航空のマイレージが10万マイルほどあったので使えるかと思ったのですが、往復で12万マイル必要でした。ヨーロッパや東南アジア経由のフライトも全く取れず、やはり日頃からANAやJALでマイルを貯めておくべきだと痛感しました。中東系の航空会社は価格が手頃なものの、情勢への不安があり、サイトにも「空港閉鎖の可能性あり」と表示されるため断念しました。
色々と調べた結果、今回は韓国経由で向かうことにしました。福岡からは接続が悪いため行きは羽田を経由しますが、その代わり、帰りにはソウルに2泊して福岡へ戻るスケジュールを組みました。ソウルは過去にトランジットで寄ったことがある程度で、きちんと訪れるのは初めてなので、この機会に少し街歩きも楽しんでこようと思います。今回の渡航も事業への大切な投資と捉え、しっかりとコンペティションを観察してきます。
Next month, I will be traveling to the UK to observe the “GAC (Global Academic Competition),” hosted by a long-standing business partner.
This historic competition involves teams of ten students—divided into age groups of 12 to 15 and 15 to 17—engaging in debates and presentations in English. Students gather from all over the world, including South America, Southeast Asia, and Central Europe.
Japanese schools have no prior record of participation, partly due to scheduling conflicts with the Japanese spring break. While an English proficiency level equivalent to Eiken Grade 2 or higher is required, I believe that second-year high school students at schools focused on English education have a solid chance to compete. Therefore, looking ahead to next year, I am planning to propose this program to junior high and high schools in collaboration with a major travel agency we are partnering with. My upcoming trip is an observation visit for this purpose, and about 20 teachers from other countries will also be attending.
However… due to the recent situation in the Middle East, airfares have skyrocketed. Even an economy class ticket on a direct flight costs around 400,000 yen. I thought I could use my roughly 100,000 United Airlines miles, but a round trip required 120,000 miles. Furthermore, I couldn’t secure any flights via Europe or Southeast Asia. This made me keenly realize that I should be accumulating ANA or JAL miles on a regular basis. Middle Eastern airlines are reasonably priced, but I decided against them due to safety concerns and warnings on their websites noting the “possibility of airport closures.”
After exploring various options, I finally decided to fly via South Korea. Because flight connections from Fukuoka are not ideal, I will route through Haneda on the way there. However, on the way back, I have arranged my schedule to stay in Seoul for two nights before returning to Fukuoka. I have only ever transited through Seoul in the past, so this will be my first time properly visiting the city, and I plan to take this opportunity to enjoy a bit of exploring. I consider this trip an important investment in the business, and I will be observing the competition very closely.
